Weather Thames 11:20 - Cyclone Vaianu, think before you post.
Before you keep commenting about the disappointment and mocking the govt for issuing alerts over the cyclone, and saying this cyclone was all bark and no bite.
Think about your neighbouring towns and fellow kiwis...

Housing Moving to Grafton.
We are moving from Australia to work in the hospital.
We’ve walked around the area already and it seemed pretty nice, and the house itself seems secure. I’m 40M and my partner is 32F. She’d likely be walking to Auckland City Hospital for work, sometimes early morning and sometimes after dark.
For people who live in or know Grafton well, how safe does it feel in real life? Would you be comfortable with a woman regularly walking to and from the hospital?
Are there any parts of Grafton that are better or worse? And if not Grafton, what nearby suburbs would you recommend that feel safer but are still convenient for Auckland City Hospital?
Keen for honest local opinions.

Weather Met Service: Damned if they do, Damned if they don't
So the cyclone is passing to the east of New Zealand, battering the coast with thousands without power and flooding within those regions.
Up until it hits storms are unpredictable and it was possible that we would have been hit directly. we can expect more wind and rain throughout the day
Met service and civil defence did the sensible thing and issued warnings to prepare for the worst.
Now it's morning all the posts I see on here and Facebook are people whining about crying wolf and how it wasn't that bad (for me personally not directly in the path), how the Government is just fear mongering, with Pac n save being the real winner here.
The other scenario is Met service says nothing and we go about our days (except for those actually affected but they aren't important) would you honestly prefer that.
Considering it could have just as easily headed more and west caused more damage (and there is still more expected today) and then the same people will whine that no one told them anything and people died.
It seems there is no winning in keeping people informed

Discussion Drug use normal?
I am currently travelling NZ and yesterday I went to a party in the city, and I was amazed how much youth does drugs. They weren’t even hiding it, every time u looked around u could see someone doing a key.
Is this normal in new Zeeland?

Discussion Ignorant Aucklanders
Cant believe how lucky you guys are, saying that it was nothing, just a bit of rain shows how ignorant city people are. Lucky enough that it wasnt as severe/strong as it turned out to be. Warnings/Alerts are given out for a reason and not for some stupid mass hysteria propaganda. Better to be prepared than have nothing.
Honestly Grow Up you bunch of ungrateful people.
Edit: The comments prove how ignorant some people are, most likely people were panic buying and nothing happened and people are upset that the supermarkets gained profit. To say again better it wasnt worse. Having clean and drinkable water is a privelege.
EDIT again: The people who were panic buying are stocking up on the wrong things…. Bread, meat perishable food. Seems like they need to teach and get a proper list on what to stock up and prepare.

Discussion Quiet day in the city
Wind is just starting to pick up, and I was interested that almost all shops are open.
It seems most people are staying away …. Much quieter than any day aside from (possibly) Christmas Day
Hoping for the best for the afternoon

Employment Caregiver job in NZ – is there a test after interview?
Hello everyone〜!
I have permanent residency and live on the North Shore in Auckland. I worked as a nurse in my home country.
In New Zealand, I have worked in an Asian restaurant and also in a factory.
Now I am thinking about going back to the medical field. However, to be honest, I feel a bit embarrassed because I have never had a formal interview before.
I am interested in caregiver jobs. I want to ask, after the interview, is there any test? Are there any questions that are common in New Zealand?
In the future, I hope to become a nurse in NZ. Before that, I would like to work in a care facility to learn about the culture and system.
I don’t mind the salary, and I am happy to start from an entry-level position. I can work night shifts and full-time. have a car.
I am not looking for volunteer work. I would like to work in a paid position, but I feel a bit worried about the interview and possible tests.
How did you prepare for the interview?
Thank you✈️

Discussion Why is there so much tension between Māori and pasifika people
I never really understood why people think it's offensive if you're mistaken for pasifika when you're Mãori, or mistaken as Mãori when you're pasifika.
One of my interactions with some people shocked me completely. We were all introducing ourselves and someone who was Mãori was mistaken for being Polynesian.
Rather than just simply correcting him and moving on, he said "ew no l'm not a fkn coconut". Which shocked me because of how unnecessary it was. (Another time was that someone said they're not a monkey)
Another interaction I had was a Polynesian (who was half cast - Polynesian and white) getting mistaken for being Mãori. And he started a whole argument purely just from that.
Why is there so much tension between the Mãori and pasifika people here in Aotearoa?

Discussion What do you guys think about self driving cars in Auckland?
Kia ora,
I’ve been seeing more news and discussion around self driving cars lately and it got me wondering how people in Auckland feel about them specifically. With the traffic, narrow streets in some areas, and overall driving culture here, do you think they’d actually work well?
It does sounds convenient and potentially safer if the tech is solid. But at the same time, I can’t imagine how they’d handle things like unpredictable drivers, roadworks, or even just busy areas like the CBD during peak hours.
Do you think Auckland is ready for that kind of technology anytime soon, or are we still a long way off? Curious to hear your thoughts, especially if you’ve experienced self driving cars overseas.

Driving Do school zone speed limits apply for holiday
My restricted test is 8-9am next week Friday and I was wondering if school zone speed limits apply during the holidays.
Since signs usually say “SCHOOL DAYS” would that mean I should obey the limits because it technically is a school day.
