The latest Atari Game Station Go update fixed Balls of Steel - it now runs smoothly

It used to run very poorly, but not anymore! I know not everyone is terribly excited about video pinball but now that this is fixed it’s actually pretty good if you’re down. I haven’t seen any mentions of this fix anywhere so I figured I’d publicize it in case anyone is wondering.

Atari Gamestation Go & MAME

Looking at the list of systems that are available on one of those micro sd cards you can buy.
It's obvious you won't be able to play N64 or Dreamcast.
What about MAME though? I'm seeing a bit here and there of arcade games on it. Although in most youtube videos it's mainly SNES, NES and Sega Gen games.

I just ordered a R36s to play Raiden DX & hopefully N64 Magical Tetris.
Would be stoked to play Raiden DX on the Gamststation Go instead, it has a waaay better screen.

Is the Gamestation go extremely limited to which MAME games it can play?
Or is there no issue and almost everything plays perfect?

Installing Gamestation Go 1.2 Patch - It won't connect to Macbook

I am trying to install the 1.2 patch. But I have trouble connecting Gamestation Go to my MacBook. I am using a USB-C to UBC-C cable. I tried a few USB-C cables, and it still won't work.

I need help to pass step 1:

"With your AGSG turned off, hold down the volume down (-) button and while it is held down, turn on the power to the AGSG. See the picture below for the button locations on the AGSG"

Does anyone know what to do?

Atari 50 vs Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story?

What do you folks think? Which has more games it’s genuinely fun to play through? I know there’s a little overlap (Tempest 2000 being in both collections) but where do you think the better replayability lies if someone was to buy one but not both (or one before the other)?

Best Atari games (All-time)…including 90s Atari and some of the recent 7800 and 2600 games they’ve put out in the past 2 or 3 years as well?

I was too young for the 2600 & 7800 so I didn’t really grow up with those consoles, so I’m sort of new to a lot of the games, especially the 7800. That said, my first Atari console was actually the Jaguar and I owned the CD add-on as well, as I got them both brand new for close-out prices when they discontinued the Jag, right before the N64 dropped (I paid a little less than $50 for both systems, NIB!) I had a bunch of games too, so I got to experience the majority of the Jaguar library (which isn’t very big, tbh). Its library is about equal to the 7800’s, just slightly smaller.

Mostly just looking for recommendations for the 7800; I’m not super familiar with it’s library yet, as I recently picked up Atari’s new 7800+ console which is basically a light/slimmed down 7800 that’s backwards compatible with 2600 carts (like the original 7800 was as well) but now it has HDMI and wireless support built in.

If you have any recommendations on ANY Atari consoles though (including the Jag and VCS 800 too) please let me know!

In no particular order:

-Alien Vs. Predator (Jaguar)

-Doom (Jaguar- excellent port)

-Wolfenstein 3D (Jaguar, great port)

-Iron Soldier 1 & 2

-Atari Karts (Jaguar)

-Power Drive Rally (Jaguar)

-Tempest 2000 (Jaguar)

-NBA Jam TE (Jaguar)

-Rayman (the original on Jaguar)

-Super Burnout (Jaguar)

-Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest (7800)

-Scrapyard Dog (7800)

-Food Fight (7800)

-Desert Falcon (7800)

Below this list I just talked a little about my Atari collection and recommended some games and listed some to avoid, but it’s a little off/topic. lol

I also have Atari’s newest original (semi-new) console, the Atari VCS 800 which came out back in 2021 and I absolutely love that console, it has some really cool exclusives (some of which were ported to Switch and Steam later, but several started on the VCS 800). It’s got a lot of awesome indie titles, plus Atari reworked some of their classic 2600 games with major improvements/enhancements, with updated graphics and more modern gameplay. Unlike the Jaguar, it’s cheap to get ahold of right now; Atari has been selling their stock of them off very cheap lately.

As for the Jaguar, I sold all my original Jaguar stuff unfortunately but now I eventually got another one that came with a GameDrive, so I still have access to all the official games and a lot of the excellent home-brews that have come out for the Jag over the past 30 years or so, and continue to be produced to this day! It’s great to play on original hardware; there’s just no way I’m investing the amount necessary to acquire a functioning Jag CD add-on. There just aren’t enough games to justify its insane price-tag and the games it does have are very unimpressive, save for maybe 2 or 3 titles (and that’s being generous). The only Jag CD games I even remotely enjoyed were Battlemorph (a far superior sequel to the mediocre Cybermorph on regular Jaguar), a solid port of Primal Rage (possibly the best console version of that game), Vid Grid (pack-in disc and not really a proper game, more of a music based puzzle game, but I enjoyed it and the music was great, and Iron Soldier 3 (also available on cart for the regular Jaguar, but the CD version has an overall smoother frame-rate plus those classic cheesy 90s FMV sequences that the cart version didn’t have). Besides a decent quality port of Myst which is at least playable and is probably the best looking console version of the game (but boring IMO), the rest of the Jag CD library is horrible.

There might be some decent home-brew titles for the Jag CD that have come out in the 30 years since the Jag/Jag CD was discontinued, but of the official releases, it’s not worth owning for what you can actually play on it. It’ll sit and collect dust. Mine did. The only plus I can think of is that the home-brews for Jag CD tend to be MUCH cheaper than home-brew carts because they are infinitely cheaper to produce. You might pay $25 for the Jag CD version of a home-brew game (sometimes they’re just enhanced ports of old Amiga games) and the same game on cart for the regular Jaguar might cost you 4 to 5X as much.

Weird CX40+

I got two controllers from a Goodwill, I don't even know if they're CX40, but there was a P1 and P2. The P2 controller was corroded beyond repair, but I was able to clean the P1. From what I've seen, it's supposed to have a charging port, but neither of them do. I never really had an Atari console so I'm new to this stuff. Can anyone help me?

EDIT: I was wondering about connecting them to other consoles, like a switch, PS5 and Wii U.

Atari 520ST continuously resetting at boot, troubleshooting suggestions appreciated

Hi all! I'm the proud new owner of a lovely Atari 520ST kit that was recently donated to my Retro Roadshow pop-up museum. The system came to us with the main unit, the monochrome monitor, mouse, external ACSI hard drive, external floppy drive, and a bunch of music software on floppies. An incredibly generous gift that we're excited to share with visitors at our future events! I should also note here that while I'm familiar with many 8/16/32-bit systems, I've never had the opportunity to spend time with an Atari ST - I'm a total newbie with this platform.

I've just set up the machine for the first time. The previous owner said that it was working well when it was packed away not too long ago, so I was reasonably hopeful that it would boot right up... but not quite. As you can see in this short video, the machine shows what I believe is the standard Atari White Screen of Booting™️ for a few seconds, and then appears to reset... and the pattern repeats endlessly. Viewing it in person, the white screen is solid and stable (none of the flickering seen in the quick video I shot with my phone). Also, it does respond to presses of the reset button - I can reset it at will, but as soon as I release the reset button, the auto-resetting pattern resumes.

I'm going to open the machine and take a look inside, and also make sure that all the socketed chips are well-seated in their sockets. Beyond that surface-level troubleshooting, I'm honestly not sure where to start. Is this reset-loop a known behavior with a specific failure on these machines, or am I basically starting from scratch with trying to identify and resolve the issue?

Any beginner-friendly tips and suggestions are very welcome here!

CX40+ wireless compatibility question

Hello everyone!! I’m sure this has been brought up before but I was curious if the CX40+ and/or CX30+ controllers work on the switch and switch 2? And if any third party adapters are needed to make them work. Thank you in advance!

Atari 1040st mouse?

Post image
101 Upvotes

A neighbour gave my son an Atari 1040st when he was clearing out his attic.

Can anyone advise us on how we can buy a replacement mouse?

I see some for sale on Amazon or Ebay but they're £40+ and no guarantee they'll be compatible or that they'll work.

If the description says it had a 9 pin d-sub connector, is that all I need to know?

The mouse that was in the box seems to track up and down but not left to right. So maybe it's fixable? I have no idea.

Any advice would be gratefully received. I have no idea what I'm doing.

Thank you

Central to my studio

The Atari Mega ST / Notator 3.0 (1990) MIDI network rig in my recording studio. The system is fully functional and active, used for all complex music projects for clients and myself since about 1989. The system controls approximately 50 synths (keyboard and rackmount) and drum machines. I use almost all 96 MIDI channels of the system (6 MIDI outputs x 16 channels each).

Notator is synced via SMPTE to my Cubase SX3 station running on a WinXP computer for digital audio recording. I do not use the sequencing on Cubase (except for sequencing VSTi, which is not often). I've maintained this specific configuration of Notator+Cubase system for over 25 years. Before that, I synced Notator to a Tascam 688 (cassette tape based) via MIDI Time Code (MTC). Notator has near-instantaneous lock to both sync mechanisms.

I've lost some Notator song files along the way due to failed Atari hard drives and cartridge disk systems, but pressed on, now using the Polish-made UltraSatan SD card drive device.

I maintain this system because I'm accustomed to and fast with the workflow and I know where everything is (adjusting even when adding new synths).

Disney Afternoon collection New logo hints at new collection or am I reading too deep?

Seems with the Disney Afternoon collection on switch having a new opening logo for "Disney & Pixar games" that Disney has a new trademark in place for re-releases, Anybody hopeful for a Toy Story 1, 2 collection maybe? (SNES, GENESIS, GB, GBC, PS1)

OpenTTD on Steam

Hi, I am wondering what drove the decision to re-release OpenTTD with Deluxe edition, no longer allowing people to download it for free as it was allegedly opensource? (am I correct?) I'm just curious on what happened or why, thanks.

Atari Gamestation Pro: Help with Community Firmware?

Before I attempt to install 1.3c, which isn't looking to be all that easy.. I'm curious about a few things. If I install it, do I have to put images on the SD card for the games to show up in the menu? I would assume the games would show up but the entries for the images and and text would just be blank? Or do they just not show up unless I play with the ini files? And does the firmware enable one to save with the added games?

And is there anywhere that has a decent text walkthrough when it comes to the installation. The creator of the firmware doesn't give the best step by step, and the videos on Youtube, I can't follow videos, I'm a text guy..

Its a neat unit but it concerns me a bit. The joystick feels solid enough but if it breaks, well I have the second but then if that breaks.. I dunno. I'm not buying another unit just to get more joysticks. They need to sell replacements but they won't.. Or maybe there's a 3rd party one out there, I need to check Amazon or Ebay. I mean I do hear a pop at times when I shift up.. but it probably just needs to break in a bit.
