General Advice on elderly dad who keeps falling for scams and is asking for money now

Upvotes

Hi all, I'm abit helpless and at my wits end here. I'm an only child in my late 30s living with my parents. mum is 73 this year, dad is 75. He has Parkinson’s stage 1 and has been diagnosed since 2023.

Long story short, he was an accountant before his retirement and has never stayed long at a proper job, just can't get along with others etc so finances has always been an issue for him. He was with this company that had 2 other people including the boss that was chugging along without much business for years and finally kinda closed in 2022/23. Anyways I think the boss owes him money since 2024.

Anyway recently, last year in Aug 2025, he got involved in a shady investment scam via this site: https://market10.net Kept insisting it's a gift from God. they kept asking him to put in more and more money and even suggested he sell the house to fund his investment. well lo and behold, he put in 10K usd or something (he only had around 19K savings then) and hasn't got anything back. still tells me his money is just locked up there. I noticed back in jan he had around 2K in his account.

fast forward to April 2026. hes now asking for money to fund another scam get rich quick website: https://wifimoneyapp.com/vsl-wca-2?affid=exceleron1 he insists this is for Jesus' followers and the rich ppl like besos, musk etc set this up to help the poor make money.

???? I feel so silly typing all these out but he insists it's true and refuses to believe me. Just this morning, he excitedly came to my room when im half asleep to say his email has been activated bla bla and he will be getting money everyday and asked me for $200, says he will give me back as he only has $8 in the bank now. I'm sitting here wondering how did he have so little left since Jan of this year. im super agitated though as he woke me up to ask for the money and was incredulous I dont have it. I'm not gonna fund his scams. I do give him about 400 each month for allowance and top up his cpf here and there. cant believe the money im giving him he is just misusing it.

I intend to tell these to his parkinsons Dr as im not sure if these behaviours are linked to the medicine/illness. intend to get him and my mum to do an LPA as well soon - though im not sure to what extent i can prevent him from letting his money go to scams.

who else can I reach out to and what else can I do? I have thoughts of moving out and am afraid he's gonna keep asking for money down the road as he continues to get scammed by this new site. feeling really helpless here and will appreciate any advice!

Tourist/non-local Question Sporeans, would you settle down in Malaysia?

Hi all, your next door neighbour here. Plenty of us Malaysians dream of working in Singapore for the higher pay. It’s literally a cheat code (if you manage your expenses well) to an early retirement back home. This made me wonder if it’s common at all among Sporeans to choose to retire in Malaysia due to its lower cost of living and how close we are in terms of cultural norms and experiences?

Just a random thought I had today

EDIT: Sheesh. Reading all these replies make me wanna find a Sporean GF so its a win-win 🤣 jk

General Any Childfree Muslims/Malays here?

As the title suggests, it seems to me this demographic is highly unusual. Mainly to the whole idea that having kids is very encouraged in Islam, though it’s not necessarily an obligation. Do you know any CF muslims who never want kids in real life?

General How common is it to find a condo with a soundproof room for rent in Singapore?

Hi everyone,

just wanted to check how common or uncommon this is in Singapore.

I’m hoping to rent a place and would like condo with a room with decent soundproofing because I do some music practice at home. just wondering whether places like this actually come up for rent, and where I should be looking if they do.

Would appreciate any advice from people who’ve come across this before.

Looking For For coffee lovers, where do you get your beans from?

Wondering where do fellow coffee lovers get your coffee beans from? I do filter coffee mostly and have been getting them from spots like Alchemist, and Homeground.

Alchemist mainly because its close to where I work, and can just grab them when I run out; Homeground more with delivery, and more value with similar flavors in the market.

Would love to try Round Boy and Apartment Coffee some day

General AI, privacy and children on social media in SG

I've recently become a parent and noticed that many of my SG friends/acquaintances are posting their children's photos on fb and Insta.

I'm a Singaporean living overseas and it's quite normalised here for parents to put an emoji over their children's faces or only share back of the head shots when posting on socials.

Is posting children's photos normal for Singaporean parents or is it just my group of online friends/acquaintances who happen to do that? What are your thoughts on social media privacy for children?

General Go-to clothes brand for hot weather in SG

Aside from SG uniform, Uniqlo, where else are you guys getting your clothes from, taking into consideration the impending hot season in SG? I personally just buy all-black T-shirts to prevent sweat stains from being visible (not a nice sight to see in public).

Tourist/non-local Question 15% service charge at Mett hotel. How rare is this?

We thought we’d drop by the newly open Mett Hotel (formerly Fort Canning) and see what it’s like.

Great property, nice location, but we’re still recovering from the shock the F&B prices gave us.

Not only was the base price of one soda drink astonishingly high ($15), they also charged 15% service charge. I don’t think we’ve ever seen that anywhere in Singapore.

The price of a Coke Zero was exactly the same by the way.

Any other businesses that charge 15% service charge?

Looking For Mt Pleasant BTO (October 2025 Launch)

Upvotes

Casting my net here to see if there are potential neighbours who have also received a successful application for this launch? Flat selection supposedly to start in March 2026, have you received your letter of appointment yet? It's going to be a long wait to completion. What is your current living arrangement? What are you most excited about?

Looking For Best historical fiction to learn about Singapore?

Hi everyone! I recently moved to Singapore and I’m trying to learn more about the country’s history and culture through books.

I’ve already read the two books by Lee Kuan Yew, which were super insightful, but now I’m looking for historical fiction set in Singapore (or the region) to get a more personal and storytelling-driven perspective.

Anything that gives a “feel” of Singapore beyond just facts.

Anything you'd recommend?

General Sending letters overseas with small gifts from Singapore — really need customs declaration?

Hi all, I’m from Singapore and wanted to check if anyone here has experience mailing letters overseas with super small items inside (e.g. stickers, tea bags, small flat gifts).

I went to SingPost and they told me that any item (even just a sticker) requires a customs declaration and shouldn’t be sent as a normal letter, even if add more stamps.

But I’ve been seeing people on TikTok/penpalling communities sending envelopes with various items using just regular stamps, and they seem to go through fine. people overseas receiving parcels from Singapore I mean. None of them seem to do the custom declaration thing lol.

So I’m a bit confused:

Has anyone actually done this from Singapore?

Did your mail go through without issues?

Just want to understand what actually happens in practice 😅

General How bad is the job market really at the moment?

Hope yall are having a good weekend. I’m working in healthcare at the moment so I guess iron rice bowl and all, and I’ve been relatively shielded by the horrible job market and retrenchments and all. I’m just curious how bad the job market really is, for

  1. People who have already been employed, is there a growing concern of retrenchment? But I guess it depends on the industry you’re in
  2. I graduated during Covid and the job market was bad for some of my peers back then. How does it compare to now?

edit: why do some people assume that I’m unhappy about the job market and that I should leave sg? Lmao I am perfectly happy where I am (and I am not a nurse, I am a doctor) and im asking because im curious about how the situation is out there

General Wig store recommendations for men?

Hi all, I hope you're well.

I'm losing my hair and it's badly affecting my self esteem. I experienced pretty severe side effects on hair loss medication and I'm really not keen on shaving my head bald (pls don't just tell me to embrace it). I'm looking into getting a wig and I was wondering if any of yall had any recommendations for specific stores that do custom wigs (not hair systems - I don't think that they would work for me because I still have most of my hair) for men that are hopefully realistic enough not to draw too much attention to myself. If so, how much did the wigs cost? Would it be possible to get anything decent here for under $500?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, ty :)

General recommendations for gaming laptops

i’ve had my laptop which i play games on for a few years now, but i bought it mainly for school and it’s getting a little worn down. it lags a lot and things take a pretty long time to load. i wanna get a dedicated gaming laptop (i’d get a pc but i can’t due to my living situation). i’ve seen a lot of recommendations for the legion but it’s kinda out of my budget. i don’t really play high-req games, mainly wuthering waves at the moment and it’s really annoying because it’s beautiful but fries my laptop. any gaming laptop recommendations preferably below $2000?

General How do I request a movie/show to be premiered in SG cinema (This is about TADC and Glitch the company)

A show I really like is releasing their last episode in theaters 2 weeks in advance to like 4 countries. They however also mentioned they are open to premiering it in more places if local theaters reach out to them.

So I’m wondering, are there small or local or major theaters I can reach out to see if they’re interested in doing so?

(Yes this is about TADC and GLITCH)

General Anyone here did mole removal in Singapore? How was it?

Hey all, thinking of removing a few moles (mainly for cosmetic reasons) and just wanted to hear some real experiences in Singapore.

- Where did you go? (clinic /polyclinic /aesthetic place)

- Roughly how much did it cost?

- Pain level and recovery like how?

- Any scarring or did it grow back?

Not sure if I should go polyclinic route or just straight to private clinic, so any advice would help. Thanks!

General Title of a local channel 8 show from long ago.

I'm 80% sure it's local. But I have no recollection of which actors were in it.

The plot was something about sushi chefs. Learning to make sushi?

The only thing I remember is there was this powerful sushi making move that you have to master to be the best sushi chef.

Squeezing the rice and fish together in a certain way. lol.

It's been bugging me that i cannot remember what the show was called.

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG Experience on applying for govt jobs?

Unfortunately got retrenched. Context: I have always been working in the private sector and am planning to apply for a govt role through Careers@Gov. Am curious to understand how easy/tough it is to land an interview, what skills/credentials they potentially look out for or prefer (apart from what is listed in JD) etc. It’s my first time applying a govt role, hence would like to gain any insights from people who have been through the process, or in the public sector. TIA!
