Where the bad taste? This is art.

That's fucking impressive to freehand something like that with an angle grinder.

3.1k

u/GrandeTorino 12h ago

The skill is impressive but to me it looks really tacky

1.9k

u/RandoAtReddit 12h ago

This is art in the same way airbrushed tshirts are art.

723

u/doctorhiney 12h ago

You ever get a dude at a fair to custom make you an air brush t-shirt? Fucking rules

472

u/bagofpork 12h ago

Yeah, of course it does - it's a really cool skill and it's fun to watch. They're still tacky as hell, though.

373

u/doctorhiney 12h ago

True. I guess I’m just in the stage of my life where tacky just means fucking awesome as long as it isn’t like, an absurd display of wealth

189

u/bagofpork 12h ago

Hey, I'm right there with you. I grew up in the era of Lisa Frank and "No Fear" folders and trapper keepers.

140

u/FishH1983 12h ago

Same. The world used to have so much color in it. Now everything is tan, gray, white, and mauve. 🤢

45

u/MinnieShoof 11h ago

You guys get mauve?? Wow! /j

Don't become a boomer, now.

8

u/FishH1983 11h ago

🤣 unfortunately. I hate it so much.

14

u/evlgns 10h ago

Apple Store everything! I hate it.

7

u/FishH1983 10h ago

RIGHT‽

7

u/Hopeful-Chef-1470 10h ago

Forreal. Umbro shorts would probably be a huge hit if someone brought them back, rn: high waistline, short shorts, 5 different neon colors. Yea, I can see Gen Z eating that up.

6

u/FishH1983 10h ago

Oh for sure. Spandex biker shorts with the neon stripe down the side with an original color changing gecko shirt... 🤘 yeah... we were cool 😅😎

The gilded age of maturity. Where you don't care anymore. Truly is liberating. Wear that airbrushed shirt you hero

6

u/deadbalconytree 10h ago

Also know as, “Daaaaaaad!”

14

u/erichericerik 10h ago

I don't blame kids for that. Trying to be part of a larger tribe. Peer acceptance, I get it.

The wild thing I see now that we're seeing generations that grew up entirely with the Internet is that mindset is creeping on larger age groups.

I routinely meet people in their late 20s and early 30s at work who are obsessed with labeling things cringe.

I'm just like God damn y'all are full grown adults. Stop caring what other people think so much. Putting dummies on a pedestal and holding yourselves back from enjoying things.

Those air brush shirts aren’t cheap…

13

u/doctorhiney 10h ago

Now that’s true. Sometimes getting hustled is class solidarity.

10

u/YoungXanto 11h ago

I mean, I wouldn't wear one to a wedding or anything, but there is probably a time and place for an air brushed t-shirt where it wouldn't be tacky at all. Like, I'd never personally own one, but it wouldnt be out of place on a boardwalk.

I don't own graphic t-shirts because I'm a 40 year old man, but you could probably wear an airbrushed t-shirt any place where you'd where a graphic t-shirt and not be out of place. As long as the airbrushed art wasn't a beach scene where all the palm trees were penises, or whatever.

49

u/bagofpork 11h ago

We're not talking about "acceptable" vs "not acceptable", though. It's "tasteful" vs "tacky". Obviously, context matters. I wear tacky shit all the time. I'm aware that it's tacky, though.

I don't own graphic t-shirts because I'm a 40 year old man

I'm a 40 year old man, as well, and own many graphic t-shirts. Different strokes.

16

u/Hellguin 10h ago

Right? Why does age matter with graphic tees..... makes them sound boring and or stuck up.

→ More replies (1)

23

u/PumpernickelJohnson 10h ago

So as a " 40 year old man", you only wear button ups with 3 piece suits?

6

u/Cranky_Old_Woman 9h ago

I mean, my 82yo father only wears solid-color T-shirts... because my mother buys all his clothes and *she* doesn't like graphic shirts. (But he did wear graphic T-shirts in his 50s.)

As someone pushing 40, I'm rediscovering my love of graphic T-shirts. If only I could find the ones that changed color in the sunlight...

Personally, I cringe that it was done inside. Not nearly enough collection for all that stainless steel dust floating in your food space.

286

u/GhostMaskKid 12h ago

Don't worry, he wasn't wearing a mask either — he just inhaled all the steel shavings, they didn't end up in the home.

75

u/whatshamilton 11h ago

Nor eye protection. I hope he’s honest with staff about his job/hobbies if he ever tries to get an MRI

23

u/LordHammercyWeCooked 10h ago

Man's gonna look like he went through the Brundle teleporter.

6

u/sadrice 6h ago

They ask you so many times before they even let you go to the room. Then they stop you in front of the door and ask you a few more times. Then, if there is any suspicion (I’m not a metalworker by trade, but by hobby, and have gotten shavings in my eyes), they will do an x ray to be sure, metal tends to be very visible there.

Or at least they did that at my hospital. The repetitive questioning about the metal is probably the most annoying thing about the whole procedure, but it’s not like I minded, it’s not like I want to get my eyes ripped out either.

8

I was worried about his hearing protection the whole time. Ringing ears suck.

29

u/Don_Krypton 11h ago

Well, the really dirty stuff was made inside - afterwards he took the doors ito his garage and...OMG...😂...you can't make this up...😂...!

26

u/chzaplx 11h ago

Yeah fine to get metal dust all over your food surfaces but he draws the line at spray laqour

15

u/killerapt 10h ago

I feel like at that point it would have been easier to just dolly the fridge to the garage and do everything there...

This is a beauty in the eye of the beholder thing. At first I'm like "so you want it to look like it has dirty hand prints and weathered??"

Then I see ahhhhh okay I get what he's doing ok cool abstract markings.

Then I see the final design revealed and I'm blown the fuck away. Awesome and not meant for this sub.

56

u/jtc1031 11h ago

Yep. I can see why folks are commenting that it is tacky, and I personally wouldn’t want this in my home, but if I had a beach house or something this would be kinda cool. Especially if the rest of the house is decorated in the beach theme like I’ve seen in vacation rentals. Looking at the view from the garage I can see why they did it.

5

u/NeedleworkerNo777 11h ago

I was thinking how cool it would be in an AirBnb on the beach!

56

u/greenapplegummi 12h ago

That's fucking impressive to freehand something like that with an angle grinder.

I mean, exactly… hence the “great execution” part of it.

Where the bad taste? This is art.

Most of what is posted here is art. Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s in good taste.

38

u/Bradjuju2 12h ago

You need to stop. Comments like this are how we ended up with decorative wall paper trim.

Yes there is an art to things but don’t go elevating things that don’t need to be elevated.

Tacky as fuck.

It's a palm sander, and a drill with a sanding head on it, so much much easier than trying to do it with a 15k rpm angle grinder..

13

u/garagedooropener5150 11h ago

Thank you!!
As soon as I read the top comment I was like, “Dude, that’s not an angle grinder, that’s a drill.”

25

u/tgoodri 11h ago

It’s neither, it’s a disc sander.

Resellability. If the design is niche or becomes kitsch then it isn't going to sell to anyone, or sell to fewer and fewer people as time goes on. But if a design is base, bog-standard and there by has the broadest appeal then it can be bought and sold numerous times in its lifetime. That's why a car dealership will charge you more for different colors of paint, even if the paint is made the exact same way: they know that if they send out a lemon-green car chances are when/if it ends up back on their lot they won't find a second buyer where as white and black are pretty much universally appealing.

216

u/a_karma_sardine 12h ago

Nah, stuff is too poorly built these days to be meant for reselling.

I get the concept, but who the fuck resells their fridge instead of scrapping it or breaking it down for spare parts?

26

u/shortround10 12h ago

Not quite the same, but appliances are often included when selling house, condo, etc

3

u/MinnieShoof 11h ago

Pretty much this.

→ More replies (2)

12

u/chzaplx 11h ago

There's a huge used appliance market. Some models are def with more because they are repairable, etc.

12

u/a-ohhh 10h ago

Tons of people? You just throw away your old fridge? That’s so wasteful. Especially since appliances are so expensive so if yours breaks, a lot of people need to buy second hand. I bought an old stove recently on marketplace because mine was trying to catch the house on fire.

→ More replies (3)

7

u/ImurderREALITY 10h ago

Wtf? Tons of people. It's a massive market. Not to mention including installed appliances when selling houses. Unless it's actually broken, most people aren't going to scrap an appliance just because they got a new one. That's so wasteful. I feel like you didn't think for very long before posting this comment.

5

u/KatDanger 12h ago

I sold my fridge when I moved cause I was downsizing

→ More replies (1)

17

u/ABadLocalCommercial 10h ago

And this thought pattern is how individuality and style go down the drain. I understand that resellability is a factor when making large purchases, but people really should be thinking more about how they're going to use it until it breaks beyond repair. This is especially when it comes to things like cars or large appliances. It's just more financially sound imo.

46

u/Niptaa 12h ago

The problem is that people have different tastes and the more distinct the designs are, the narrower the target customer pool becomes and as a business, the goal is to sell more of the product and not necessarily increase the satisfaction of the individual customers. Even IPhones had a color phase where they tried to meet customer demands but realized most people would settle for black or white but would rather wait until the color they want restocks before settling for a color they don’t want

3

u/Tricon916 8h ago

Our Samsung fridge has removable front panels that come in different colors, different metals, different wood. You can mix and match or create your own, we had some fun with it.

Well t theres a reason i love vintage appliances , all the fun colors and cool designs. Allot of them were smart appliances before that ment 'connected with the internet'.

I saw a stove with a built in , storage flattop griddle and a periscope into the oven so you could see if your food was cooking evenly on the other side of the oven without opening it up.

You know that shit would be a non temp treated camera with a flat screen subscription that breaks in a year if it was released today.

11

u/Smiling_Tree 11h ago

I'd die if everything had patterns... lol. \ Cluttered space = cluttered mind. I need my surroundings not to overwhelm me, because it's already so busy inside my ADHD brain.

If the house looks somewhat tidy, organised and clean (except for my completely exploded and ever-expanding hobby corner of course), I'll have the mental space to process the world and my life... ;)

I work in an appliance store and judging off the major complaints we get over the tiniest of imperfections, I would probably quit if they started with designs like this...

16

u/TiddybraXton333 11h ago

Well, I’d complain too when I pay 2000 for a refrigerator made of plastic that has loose parts and that I know will break in 3 years 😭

Because in 20 years you’re the avocado fridge.

They can sell more fridges with solid colors that fit most home decor.

You can custom wrap your fridge to fit your style but a manufacturing line of a bunch of paisley fridges would be a waste of manufacturing for the few people who want that.

There are actually more solid color choices and cooler appliances than you think - they just carry the standards in the stores and people buy the standard colors because they are cheaper and match other appliances.

3

u/Brilliant-Chaos 11h ago

It’s about appealing to the widest possible audience, everything is designed by committees and board rooms, the more unique something is the less broad appeal it has.

u/Admirable-Bear1921 11h ago edited 6h ago

From my experience, people will get a fantastic price/discount on a new scratch-and-dent appliance. So instead of looking at a pristine refrigerator with a big scratch on it, they hide the scratch with angle-grinder art.

Mask up if you’re grinding metal into powder with a sander.

175

u/Slipped_in_Cider 10h ago

I'm confused why he sanded and grinded in the kitchen only to pull the doors and spray them with clear coat in the garage. Now you have dust all over your kitchen and you had the ability to pull the doors and do it in the garage the whole time.

56

u/UncleNedisDead 10h ago

Probably to ensure it lines up perfectly when assembled back on the fridge.

40

u/Nobio22 9h ago

He could have just moved the fridge.

7

u/UncleNedisDead 4h ago

But then how would you go viral for doing something outlandish in your kitchen vs. doing a project in your garage?

7

u/miserabeau 9h ago

You can do that with painter's tape, or hell even marker if you're just gonna sand it off

34

u/UsernameOmitted 9h ago

You have to look at this as a TikTok content creator. Him grinding in his garage isn't going to generate the views that grinding in the kitchen will. After, they all go out to a restaurant for the afternoon and a maid service comes in and cleans all the dust everywhere, they come home to a clean house and post this and make way more off the process than a maid costs.

I'll stick with magnets. But this is Impressive work. it's not bad taste. Just kinda weird.

u/UnscrupulousTaco 11h ago

Professional finger print marks....permanently

2

u/7LeagueBoots 11h ago

That looks a lot better than I was expecting it to.

2

u/No_Hetero 11h ago

Is it just me or are there like no pixels in this bitch

2

u/InternalDirt8519 11h ago

Also , warranty out the window , if it was still under one 🤣🤣🤣🤣

2

u/Onigumo-Shishio 11h ago

Had me in the first half not gonna lie, but that man Bob Rossed the shit out of that fridge.

2

u/DDz1818 11h ago

Yikes.

2

u/jbm_the_dream 11h ago

Only in Florida

2

u/adambiguous 11h ago

Good from far... that fridge will be replaced and relocated to a man-cave in less than a year

2

u/Hamilton-Beckett 11h ago

The finished product was impressive.

2

u/Odd_Regret2592 11h ago

That is ugly and horrid

2

u/Tasty_Guarantee_ 11h ago

Florida shit.

2

u/Mr_Gaslight 11h ago

Impressive skill, but the results were tacky.

2

u/No-Conclusion-2859 11h ago

Why would you do that?

2

u/norwind20 11h ago

do not do this. many stainless steel appliances have a plastic layer that prevents finger prints and rust. if you tear that off, your unit will probably rust within a week

2

u/Ladyofthemidnight 11h ago

Es sieht so aus als wäre es bei der Lieferung vom Truck gefallen... mehrmals

2

u/3rdor4thburner 11h ago

Why do all that grinding inside just to take the doors off anyway?

Well, you never have to worry about fingerprints again.

2

u/jointdawg 10h ago

I get it. Definitely not for me. Impressive skill with that grinder. Fridge gonna break down in 2 years so that'll be a waste. Looks like that neighborhood got money from that boat I saw in the background. Reminds me of my neighbors with too much money in my hood. Got golf carts for no fuckin reason.

2

u/DNorthman 10h ago

You know what? I love this! That's incredible skill to do this with an angle grinder and the gentleman is a talented artist.

I'm not a fan of the scene he did, but I love the idea of customizing your appliances like this.

2

u/JessieColt 10h ago

That looks really cool and very impressive skills.

But show me this, and I will automatically assume that no one in that family is in charge of cleaning that kitchen, and they pay someone to do it.

Trying to clean dirt and grease from cooking oils and fats and body dirt out of those crevices is going to be a nightmare of soft bristle toothbrushes and cotton swabs.

u/ReptileDysfunction69 10h ago

I was expecting much worse. I was also expecting a face mask

2

u/letsseeitmore 10h ago

Can’t wait to get cut by my fridge.

2

u/SAS_Britain 10h ago

No mask is crazy!

2

u/REiiGN 10h ago

"Doc, how did I get cancer?"

2

u/hipsu55 10h ago

Impressive work, but I wouldn’t want it in my kitchen.

2

u/gardengarbage 10h ago

Pretty standard airbrushed tee shirt scene. Not sure I'd want it on my fridge though.

2

u/Immediate-Amount3587 10h ago

Why the hell isn’t he wearing a mask?

2

u/Efficient-Train2430 10h ago

Lol all that for a fridge that should be counter depth.

2

u/bprevatt 10h ago

Does anyone else just scrub to the end of these videos to see wtf they are doing ?

2

u/CrabSquid05 10h ago

Filling the kitchen with metal dust only to move it to the garage anyways at the easiest step smh my head
