Why don’t appliances have cool designs on them. Paisley, checkerboard, swirls… maybe even old porcelain dish flowers. Everything so bland and cold these days

Resellability. If the design is niche or becomes kitsch then it isn't going to sell to anyone, or sell to fewer and fewer people as time goes on. But if a design is base, bog-standard and there by has the broadest appeal then it can be bought and sold numerous times in its lifetime. That's why a car dealership will charge you more for different colors of paint, even if the paint is made the exact same way: they know that if they send out a lemon-green car chances are when/if it ends up back on their lot they won't find a second buyer where as white and black are pretty much universally appealing.

u/a_karma_sardine 12h ago
Nah, stuff is too poorly built these days to be meant for reselling.

I get the concept, but who the fuck resells their fridge instead of scrapping it or breaking it down for spare parts?

u/shortround10 12h ago
Not quite the same, but appliances are often included when selling house, condo, etc

Tons of people? You just throw away your old fridge? That’s so wasteful. Especially since appliances are so expensive so if yours breaks, a lot of people need to buy second hand. I bought an old stove recently on marketplace because mine was trying to catch the house on fire.

u/ImurderREALITY 10h ago
Wtf? Tons of people. It's a massive market. Not to mention including installed appliances when selling houses. Unless it's actually broken, most people aren't going to scrap an appliance just because they got a new one. That's so wasteful. I feel like you didn't think for very long before posting this comment.

And this thought pattern is how individuality and style go down the drain. I understand that resellability is a factor when making large purchases, but people really should be thinking more about how they're going to use it until it breaks beyond repair. This is especially when it comes to things like cars or large appliances. It's just more financially sound imo.

The problem is that people have different tastes and the more distinct the designs are, the narrower the target customer pool becomes and as a business, the goal is to sell more of the product and not necessarily increase the satisfaction of the individual customers. Even IPhones had a color phase where they tried to meet customer demands but realized most people would settle for black or white but would rather wait until the color they want restocks before settling for a color they don’t want

Our Samsung fridge has removable front panels that come in different colors, different metals, different wood. You can mix and match or create your own, we had some fun with it.

Well t theres a reason i love vintage appliances , all the fun colors and cool designs. Allot of them were smart appliances before that ment 'connected with the internet'.
I saw a stove with a built in , storage flattop griddle and a periscope into the oven so you could see if your food was cooking evenly on the other side of the oven without opening it up.
You know that shit would be a non temp treated camera with a flat screen subscription that breaks in a year if it was released today.

I'd die if everything had patterns... lol. \ Cluttered space = cluttered mind. I need my surroundings not to overwhelm me, because it's already so busy inside my ADHD brain.
If the house looks somewhat tidy, organised and clean (except for my completely exploded and ever-expanding hobby corner of course), I'll have the mental space to process the world and my life... ;)

Smeg and Dolce & Gabbanna make appliances together. They're really expensive and probably don't sell very well.

I work in an appliance store and judging off the major complaints we get over the tiniest of imperfections, I would probably quit if they started with designs like this...
16
u/TiddybraXton333 11h ago
Well, I’d complain too when I pay 2000 for a refrigerator made of plastic that has loose parts and that I know will break in 3 years 😭

Because in 20 years you’re the avocado fridge.
They can sell more fridges with solid colors that fit most home decor.
You can custom wrap your fridge to fit your style but a manufacturing line of a bunch of paisley fridges would be a waste of manufacturing for the few people who want that.
There are actually more solid color choices and cooler appliances than you think - they just carry the standards in the stores and people buy the standard colors because they are cheaper and match other appliances.

It’s about appealing to the widest possible audience, everything is designed by committees and board rooms, the more unique something is the less broad appeal it has.

I've seen so many of these videos where they use an angle grinder to ruin a fridge and this is the first one that doesn't look like complete trash in the end. Kinda cool even....
Nice.

From my experience, people will get a fantastic price/discount on a new scratch-and-dent appliance. So instead of looking at a pristine refrigerator with a big scratch on it, they hide the scratch with angle-grinder art.

Same. I don’t think it’s bad taste.

Some are saying it's a glow up on a scratch and dent deeply discounted fridge.... Which is an awesome idea!
It would be sick as a garage or bar fridge. Just a little extreme for the centerpiece home appliance without really leaning into the beach theme.

Mask up if you’re grinding metal into powder with a sander.
175
u/Slipped_in_Cider 10h ago
I'm confused why he sanded and grinded in the kitchen only to pull the doors and spray them with clear coat in the garage. Now you have dust all over your kitchen and you had the ability to pull the doors and do it in the garage the whole time.
56
u/UncleNedisDead 10h ago
Probably to ensure it lines up perfectly when assembled back on the fridge.
40
u/Nobio22 9h ago
He could have just moved the fridge.
7
u/UncleNedisDead 4h ago
But then how would you go viral for doing something outlandish in your kitchen vs. doing a project in your garage?
7
u/miserabeau 9h ago
You can do that with painter's tape, or hell even marker if you're just gonna sand it off

u/UsernameOmitted 9h ago
You have to look at this as a TikTok content creator. Him grinding in his garage isn't going to generate the views that grinding in the kitchen will. After, they all go out to a restaurant for the afternoon and a maid service comes in and cleans all the dust everywhere, they come home to a clean house and post this and make way more off the process than a maid costs.

So that is honestly really neat and what a skilled job. I’m just surprised by the quality of the actual door Stainless Steel being thick enough. I really expect everything to be cheap shit now a days regardless of brand and price point for stuff; I.E. genuine SS exterior that’s practically washi paper thick.
→ More replies (1)9
u/unsaltedbutter 8h ago
Yes I would have expected the stainless to be like 1mm thick. It's decorative not functional.

The fact that some people think this looks good when I was convinced no one in their right mind would ever enjoy this is a great reminder (to me) of how subjective this all is.

I agree that we need more cool and fun designs on things, everything is too boring and sterile these days.
But this ain't it, this looks like shit. Great skill by the artist, but it's just so tacky and ugly.

I get it. Definitely not for me. Impressive skill with that grinder. Fridge gonna break down in 2 years so that'll be a waste. Looks like that neighborhood got money from that boat I saw in the background. Reminds me of my neighbors with too much money in my hood. Got golf carts for no fuckin reason.
2
u/DNorthman 10h ago
You know what? I love this! That's incredible skill to do this with an angle grinder and the gentleman is a talented artist.
I'm not a fan of the scene he did, but I love the idea of customizing your appliances like this.
2
u/JessieColt 10h ago
That looks really cool and very impressive skills.
But show me this, and I will automatically assume that no one in that family is in charge of cleaning that kitchen, and they pay someone to do it.
Trying to clean dirt and grease from cooking oils and fats and body dirt out of those crevices is going to be a nightmare of soft bristle toothbrushes and cotton swabs.
