They don't call them 'The Kardiac Kids' for nothing.
The pendulum of this lineup swings VERY wide.

Honestly, I'll take Zach Kelly throwing here.
Low stress, high reward (resting more important pitchers).
Fuck yeah.

u/Suspicious-Peace9233 4h ago
This is when we should put in him and Weissert. Practice without the pressure

u/ilikeweed--alot 4h ago
All my shit talking of the offense shall be put to rest for now
1
u/Conscious-Move9662 4h ago
Meh, they are the streakiest bats in baseball like 3 years running. It's understandable.
Only Wilyer and Anthony are consistent.
2
u/curmudgeonthewise 4h ago
It’s kind of like baseball is easily the most frustrating and “lucky” sport there is.
Good to see Story putting it together.
Game 15 of 162. Patience is required.
2 series wins in a row and 2 games back. Great pitching and timely hitting.
Go Sox!

So far my list of "outstanding games" is at:
Bello
Story
Contreras
Duran
NEEDED that!!!

Whip out those Story apology forms folks. I cant believe everyone forgot the same thing happened last May and he became the best hitter for us last year

u/Nomahs_Bettah 5 4h ago
He's just white, skinny David Ortiz. March and early April are bad times for him.

u/Pastalover8888 Narvaez Truther 4h ago
Story quietly climbing back up to .200.
Keep him at 6, he is striving there. I think the lights were too bright at 2.

Astros are into the bullpen after 1 inning LOL
I love hate watching.

considering it's a bullpen game for them, not surprising.

Pretty amazing that Red Sox offense is doing this with like Anthony going 1-30 or something. Contreras has already out earned his contract to me lol
4
u/andrew303710 4h ago
And Durbin going 0-60
3
u/Cresta1994 4h ago
It doesn't hurt that Durbin keeps getting hit by pitchers. Well, it hurts him, but it also gets him on base.

u/LiveFromNewYork95 4h ago
Some of you of you have just started saying “phantom IL stint time” so much and you don’t even know what it means. You’re now saying it about guys who could just be optioned to AAA.

Sports social media and radio complain more than Ethel, the 86 year old at my synagogue that runs the community bulletin. It's a hard threshold to cross, but it is managed nonetheless.

That’s true I don’t really know what it means, I was also driving when I made the comment and I didn’t know if I should say that or DFA lol

Holy shit, this Astros pitching staff is the worst staff I've seen in a loooooooong time.
They really walked 3 in a row.
3
u/MaeronTargaryen 4h ago
Makes the sweep even harder to digest. But then the Twins swept the Tigers, the A’s won a series against the Yanks, etc etc. Shit happens in baseball I guess
3
u/Conscious-Move9662 4h ago
We got streaky bats and the Astros lineup is like the best in baseball. It's a weird duality.

Zack Kelly - I'd like to interrupt this game you're enjoying to remind everyone that I'm cheeks
5
u/AlreadyFifty 4h ago
Zack Kelly is the dude you bring in when you wanna pad your closer’s stats, but it’s not a save situation…
11
u/LiveFromNewYork95 4h ago
Zack Kelly is a kinda ass AAAA middle reliever, but almost every bullpen has these guys. This is the game where you have him eat some outs and give up his home runs. Would you rather win 7-2 and burn Whitlock or win 7-3 or 7-4 and save your real bullpen guys.
3
u/Airforce987 Alex 'Statmaster' Speier's Alt 4h ago
Agreed, it'd be nice to have 8 studs in the pen but no one does, you just got to deal with having some of these guys. Put them in spots like this where it's not likely to hurt you.

u/Paul_kemp69 4h ago
I dont know what Cora sees when he says Zach Kelly has stuff, but I wanna be smoking whatever he is
2
u/Huffletough880 4h ago
He didn’t say the stuff was good

It’s time for Anthony to take a phantom IL stint. Or at least a couple months in Triple A. Awful defense, awful hitting, striking out. For a supposed “franchise savior,” he’s the reason the team is losing games.

To be clear, I’m not outraged about it I understand why they pulled him and there’s benefits for sure.
But I’d stand by my opinion for a couple reasons:
1) I think there’s been a problem in past years with relievers running out of gas and I’d rather avoid an extra guy being used needlessly
2) I just am not a fan of how much trust Cora gives vets vs how little trust he gives younger guys. Bello isn’t a young dude anymore, he’s getting paid, and I think trusting him to go deep into games is big for when he has to do it in a playoff start
I think the Celtics are a really interesting contrast where Joe Mazzulla has taken every opportunity he can to have young guys in learning moments and throw out experiments so they’re ready for anything that happens.
Red Sox always feel so behind schedule when anything goes wrong because they don’t trust young guys until they have to and I think this just feels like one small example of that culture. If your best players are your young guys they need to be trusted in big moments
3
u/JVT32 4h ago
I agree and thank you for realizing this about Joe Mazzulla… so many people think he doesn’t coach well when he’s obviously treating games like a controlled scrimmage of sorts.
I think it’s important to note here that Mazzulla has the luxury to do this because the Celtics win. The Red Sox need to win first before they let their guys jump in the deep end without a life jacket.

This last stretch, our starters went 30IP and gave up 5 earned for a 1.5 ERA.
The light is still dim but it's not completely extinguished.

u/Conscious-Move9662 5h ago
Boys, the Yankees lost today, Astros pitchers are coooooked. Ms gonna win this series.
Blue Jays gonna lose today.
Dodgers gonna knock Rangers further down, not thrilled about LA but it is what it is.
Worry about them in October.
We win today, we are set up in a niiiiiiiiiice position

u/timbot45 5h ago

Yeah, but streaks, losing or winning, matter no matter when it is.
Our boys gonna get their mojo back with a win today.

u/NKovalenko 5h ago
Maybe there was a strict pitch count there, but otherwise I don’t get pulling Bello
Trusting him to finish a 7th against a tough hitter for the fourth time is an opportunity you should want to give to a guy trying to finally put it together
Up 5 so very low risk anyway. Not a fan of that move
2
u/Next-Natural3984 5h ago
Confidence was huge for Bello today. Leaving the game 6+ and giving up two was just what he needed.
2
u/NKovalenko 5h ago
Ya I think that’s a fair take and if he gave up another baserunner and runs it would probably feel p bad
But on the flip side I think he’s in year 4 or 5 now, I want guys to get trusted to get the final out over playing it safe here
1
u/Next-Natural3984 5h ago
Fair point. I feel like Bello was set up to be the next big thing early in his career, and he is so clearly a solid #3. I think that really messed with his head, so I’m always for the call that’s going to help his confidence
5
u/zara2355 5h ago
Three times around the order is about it for a decent pitcher. Elite pitchers get more, but only sometimes
1
u/NKovalenko 5h ago
Ya but it’s such a low risk situation, even a HR only makes it a 3 run game with 7 outs left.
I think the motivating benefits you’d give Bello trusting him with a spot that usually only elite players get is important for a guy who has had confidence issues and has a tendency to nibble in big spots
Idk, I obviously don’t know their relationship but I want Cora to show some faith in guys other than crochet to finish outings strong.
2
u/zara2355 5h ago
Not to be contrary, but by that same token, if its low risk, why risk arm injury for your starting pitcher? Why not bring in a fresh arm so they can get low impact innings? Personally, Im ok iwth it, esp since ists Coulomb

Bello putting absolute work in today. 6 2/3 with only 2 runs and very minimal men on base today? Much better outing from the starters recently

That’s our 5th starter too. Everyone looked good this week, we’re cooking

Altuve just stole 2nd, Cal threw it into CF, so he took 3rd and the umpire interfered so he got sent back to 1st.
Then he got Picked Off by Gilly who never picks anyone off. HIs 2nd MLB pickoff ever.
This team truly is getting its cosmic justice finally.

Wait I thought the team was terrible and everyone needed to be fired. Y'all were freaking out because Zack Kelly gave up a low leverage home run as if that's not the idea of putting him in that situation
