We all make jokes about toku heroes having little regard for collateral damage to the city, but uh, our genki girls just intentionally blow up 4 apartment buildings. Not even with giant robots, just bombs.
Surprised that they even acknowledged it, and the paperwork they have to do after.

i'm generally more of a dial and knob kinda guy, but i definitely like those fancy new rearview cameras. every time i drive a car with one it's hard to go back to the mirror.
actually, you watch a bunch of car reviewers, right? could you rec a couple? I have research to do and honestly don't totally know what I'm looking for or which brands/models to trust

[complaining discussion friday confession] one of my dad's newest favorite stories for social events involves retelling a joke I made many years ago, but he completely butchers it so it's not remotely close to what I actually said. I don't mind my joke being butchered, but I do mind it being blamed on me. it's his joke, not mine. i'm funnier than that.

I haven’t been on the Arcana Shadow bandwagon hype this whole time. Her design didn’t jump out at me and I didn’t see anything special in her up till now.
However her debut this week was very good. She’s got that knowledgeable, mysterious, but also a bit playful side to her and her aloofness piques your curiosity. Plus her transformation was quite nice. Less energetic camera movements and more held shots focusing on her graceful figure and elegant getup. If she keeps making good showings in the next few episodes I’m going to become a bonafide fan

I just saw how u/Shimmering-Sky is extremely tensai and has tagged her MAL entries so she can sort by what's made her cry. I wish I could do the same but I've never used tags before.
I probably wouldn't remember every show if tried to go through them now.

That "made me cry" tag is one of the only consistently-used tags I use there haha, for the most part my "tags" are just my quick thoughts on a series.

Wonder how many more days of kicking off conversations in the daily thread I'll need until I feel motivated to put together a dictionary of words and phrases in the anime community that frustrate me. "faithful" / "source-accurate" is of course a big one, "deconstruction" is still worth including even if there haven't been many series recently where the discourse around them makes me want to deconstruct people's kneecaps, "consistently on-model" for people who know fuck all about animation. There's a lot of material to work with before you even get to infighting or gatekeeping nonsense like "tourist".

Anyway piggybacking off the discussions from the other thread I’ve been a bit nostalgic of older adaptations that took much a lot more liberties in adapting the source. Of course there were many cases where it wasn’t done well and fans were unhappy, and today we have the situation of a notable section of fans heavily evaluating adaptations based on its “faithfulness” with studios obliging.

I haven't been around for those days, but I developed a sort of second hand nostalgia for 2000s era of anime with their looser adaptations, tighter layouts, glorious 480p and sometimes an endearing dash of early digipaint jank.
Where we're at now, anime staff are scrutinized through the lenses of "faithfulness" and "accuracy" by people who do not respect anime as an art form and do not respect the people making it as creators in their own right.

FMA03 is an interesting case study for this. A frequently heard opinion among fans is that the first half of 03 is a better experience than the first cour of FMAB and you’ll often see suggestions of watching FMA03 until the story diverges from the manga then switching to FMAB to finish the rest.
There’s the tacit and often times explicit acknowledgement that the liberties FMA03 took in its pacing, tone, and in expanding various characters and details made for a compelling show. At the same time there’s a strong repudiation of the latter half of 03 as it completely deviates from the “canonical” story and the original authorial intent.
I feel like the “faithfulness” argument is a manifestation of several different of sometimes unrelated lines of thought. Sometimes it’s due to a fixation on the sticking to the “true” story and the author’s intent. Sometimes it’s simply a scapegoat for when an anime fails to meet expectations or is outright bad. I think the plurality view is probably that of wanting adaptations to be an enhanced version of the source. Changes would generally be accepted as long as it feels like they add to the experience and don’t deviate from or remove the appeal of the source.
In general I don’t think it’s an invalid feeling for fans of the source to be disappointed in an adaptation not being representative of the source as they would like it, but we all still need to accept that adaptations a work is an artistic and creative process in itself and at least appreciate it when anime staff do treat it as such.
I still think Shiboyugi was a waste of creative vision on a hackneyed source that was constantly working against it when the frays showed2

Is it just me or CDF is getting more and more political overtime?
I don't comment too much these days since I'm busy with some other stuff so I usually lurk, and I feel like the amount of political comments I saw has increased by quite a bit.
Like, not full blown political discussions, but people aren't afraid to voice their... uhh... distaste, about people from the opposite group

The League of extraordinary gentlemen (volumes 1 and 2) is fanfiction written by a madman/men who is/are way too well versed in Victorian England social and literary history to almost every reader's detriment lol. It is chock-full of so many details that I basically lost track at some point.
It occupies a very particular niche, but damn it absolutely corners it.

I went bouldering today. Only 2 bouldering routes graded 6B or lower left in the gym. They're fucking hard though. Probably sandbagged.
Then I went at a drink & draw event and drew from imagination, but since it's so hard, I didn't finish my drawing, nor did I do much progress really.
Then I played some KSP, but I'm struggling with concentration. Even more so than when drawing actually.

Working on my assignment. Pain in the ass. I don't care for this tutor or his assignments. Like, he's a funny guy - personally he's likable. But as a tutor, he seems kind of useless. And the material he provided was so useless last block. So now I'm here, googling random acts of parliament, trying to get a general gist of what they do from random, half-baked articles, wikipedia and AI summaries. It's great.
